What is happening at Stonehenge for the Autumn Equinox?

English Heritage has confirmed that Stonehenge will provide free Managed Open Access for people wishing to mark the Autumn Equinox in September 2026.

The monument field will open as soon as there is enough daylight for access to be managed safely. The gathering provides an unusual opportunity to experience Stonehenge around sunrise, outside the normal pattern of a daytime visit.

Stonehenge is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a place regarded as sacred by many of those attending. Visitors are asked to respect the monument, the surrounding landscape and other people taking part in the gathering.

Is Stonehenge free for the Autumn Equinox?

Yes. English Heritage has confirmed that the Autumn Equinox Managed Open Access is free.

This is a special event arrangement and is different from a normal daytime visit to Stonehenge. Standard visits at other times continue to operate under the normal ticketing arrangements.

Getting to Stonehenge for the Autumn Equinox

There will be no public transport operating for the Autumn Equinox. This is one of the most important differences from planning a normal Stonehenge visit. Do not arrive expecting a regular public transport connection to take you to the event.

English Heritage advises that visitors can reach Stonehenge by car, taxi, bicycle, motorcycle or on foot. The surrounding road network is expected to remain open as usual.

If you are travelling from London or another part of the UK, plan the final part of your journey carefully. The very early start means normal daytime Stonehenge transport advice may not apply.

Parking at Stonehenge for the Autumn Equinox

The Stonehenge car park is scheduled to open at 05:15 on Wednesday 23 September. Visitors attending the Equinox gathering must vacate the car park by 10:00.

Parking and access arrangements for major events can differ from those for a normal Stonehenge visit, so visitors should follow event signage and instructions from staff on arrival.

For the location of the main Visitor Centre and practical driving information, see our Stonehenge parking guide.

How do you get from the Visitor Centre to the stones?

Walk to Stonehenge

The walk from the Stonehenge Visitor Centre to the stone circle takes approximately 25–30 minutes and covers around 1½ miles / 2 km.

The route crosses National Trust downland and can be uneven. Because visitors will be arriving before sunrise, sensible footwear and a small torch are strongly recommended.

Use the shuttle bus

A shuttle bus will operate between the Visitor Centre and the stones once the monument field has opened.

Shuttle buses will run at regular intervals, with priority boarding available for visitors with accessibility needs.

What should you bring to the Stonehenge Autumn Equinox?

September mornings on Salisbury Plain can be cold, wet and dark. English Heritage recommends arriving prepared for the outdoor conditions.

  • Sensible footwear suitable for fields and uneven ground.
  • Warm and waterproof clothing appropriate for the forecast.
  • A small torch for walking before daylight.
  • A small groundsheet or blanket if required.
  • A small bag rather than luggage or a large backpack.
Check the weather before leaving. Sunrise is expected at around 06:54, but visibility will naturally depend on the weather conditions on the morning.

What can’t you bring?

Stonehenge is a protected archaeological site, and special conditions apply during Managed Open Access. Current English Heritage guidance lists a number of prohibited items.

  • Large bags
  • Alcohol or illegal drugs
  • Drones or remote-controlled flying devices
  • Glass
  • Bladed or sharply pointed items
  • Sleeping bags, duvets or tents
  • Naked flames, barbecues, candles or fireworks
  • Pets, except assistance dogs
  • Amplified music

Large umbrellas are also not permitted. Visitors should check the full English Heritage conditions before travelling, as arrangements can change.

Can you touch the stones at the Autumn Equinox?

No. Visitors must not touch or climb on the stones.

English Heritage explains that contact can damage the surface of the monument and the rare lichens growing on the stones. Visitors should follow steward instructions and treat the stone circle and surrounding landscape with care.

Accessibility at the Autumn Equinox

A limited number of accessible parking spaces are available for Blue Badge holders. Blue Badges should be clearly displayed when entering.

Visitors being dropped off can do so at the main Visitor Centre car park and use the step-free shuttle service towards the stone circle. Priority boarding is provided for people with accessibility needs.

The final approach to the stone circle includes grass as well as some hardstanding surfaces, so anyone with particular mobility requirements should review the current accessibility information before travelling.

What is the Autumn Equinox at Stonehenge?

The Autumn Equinox marks the seasonal transition from summer towards autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, when day and night are approximately equal in length.

Stonehenge is best known for its relationship with the midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset. The Equinox gathering is therefore best understood as a modern seasonal gathering at Stonehenge rather than evidence that the monument was specifically constructed around the equinox sunrise.

For visitors, the appeal is the opportunity to experience the monument at an unusually early hour alongside people gathering to mark the changing season.
